Finding the Correct Equation

“I think the issue is pornography.” The others fell silent and stared at me as though they had been slapped in the face.  A group of us had been discussing some recent events involving criminal activity and the usual reasons cited for what seems to be an increasing trend towards such actions: stressors causing mental illnesses, violent media, the dissolution of families, and way too much time being spent on violent video and computer games. We know these things. It’s simple. Our society needs to make a drastic change to overcome many of these challenges.   I believe that in our ignorance, or willful blindness, we are leaving out a key component—perhaps the key component—of trying to find a solution. “I don’t see how pornography has anything to do with it,” was one of the responses I received to my initial inclusion of it in the problem. I was astounded that great people, with great values, could be so unaware of pornography’s involvement in critical issues that impact us all.

In order to solve a mathematical problem we have to have all parts of the formula. (Assuming for the sake of the analogy we already have the correct answer)

18 = 1 + 3 + 5

In the above equation I just so happened to leave out one of the four components to this equation. No big deal, right? Obviously wrong; no one would expect to leave out a central aspect, or any aspect, of a mathematical equation and expect to get the correct answer.

18 = 10 x 1 + 3 + 5

Similar to mathematics, finding solutions to the problems we face in society requires an open, honest examination of our equation. The part of the equation we too often overlook in our society—pornography. Until we assess the tremendous impact this one element has on the problem, there is no hope in developing an appropriate plan of action. Whether the topic is cliché, uncomfortable, condemning, or seemingly not relevant in our lives, we need to acknowledge it, become educated, and then make a stand. Pornography affects every single person, whether personally or socially. We need to apply a greater force against this silent epidemic that is quietly destroying families one-by-one, and corrodes the pillars of society. We can’t risk leaving this crucial element out of our equation. As uncomfortable as it may seem, the impact pornography has on individuals, families, and society needs to be addressed.  Only together can we solve this.
